I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Mine went by doing nothing but watching my favorite TV shows, eating, and hanging out with friends. I don’t remember the last time I did that. TV in the morning is another thing I couldn’t think of, but I decided to take an absolute break and do whatever I felt like doing. We all need that break once in a while to recharge ourselves. What do you think?.

I am having terrible Monday blues after a week-long holiday, but then I am happy that finally, it’s over. Now back to the main subject of this post.

What is garlic naan?

Naan or Indian naan bread is a world-famous Indian flatbread that is served at all Indian restaurants. It is traditionally baked in a clay oven called Tandoor which reaches about 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Although the traditional naan cannot be replicated, this recipe comes pretty close. There is an option of using the oven or cooking it on the stovetop.  The texture of naan is moist, soft, elastic with a charred look on top. Enjoy it warm.

To turn this into a garlic naan, you can add chunks of garlic in the dough and also brush with garlic-infused butter.

It’s tried and tested homemade naan dough, a recipe I’ve been trying for years, and it always turns out perfect every time and goes very well with curries.!

How to make naan bread

Like any other traditional flatbread, this bread is made of flour, water, yeast, sugar, and a pinch of salt, but to make it a little softer, you can add yogurt, which creates a light & airy pillow-like texture.

You can also make pizza using naan. Try this flatbread Naan Pizza Recipe.

Naan recipe without oven

To make a NAAN BREAD RECIPE on a skillet, Place a girdle on high heat. Brush a thin layer of butter on the bottom of the skillet. Lay the naan on the skillet and place the lid. Cook for 1 minute until it puffs up unevenly and the bottom of the naan browns. Flip the naan, replace the cover and continue to cook until the other side brows. You can have some charred marks which look good on this bread. If you have iron skillets try using that.

In the above picture. The 1st one is the flipped naan which will have an almost smooth side. The 2nd one is the side which puffed up.

Oven method: Preheat the oven to 550 Degrees Fahrenheit/ 280 Degrees Celsius.

First, a flattened naan is placed on baking sheets and placed on the oven’s bottom rack for 2-3 minutes or till the top puffs up unevenly. Then, take the sheet out of the oven, flip the naan, and place it in the oven for another minute till the other side browns.

Healthy naan recipe

There are alternative ways to make naan if you do not want to use all-purpose flour!
For a healthier version, substitute all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. As this flour absorbs moisture more quickly, it tends to get more challenging to pull off and the trick here is to add more water little by little, then let it rest for another extra 25 minutes. This way, it yields a softer bread.

Butter substitute: Use Vegan butter or even pressed avocado oil to brush on top at the end.

Are naan and paratha the same?

Although they both belong in the family of flatbreads, it’s made using different techniques.
Paratha is cooked on a pan using oil or clarified butter (ghee), whereas naan is placed on a tandoor (clay oven) or baked.
Paratha is rolled, then folded multiple times to get those flaky layers, and naan is rolled out once and does not have flaky layers

Made this for the first time tonight with a first try at chicken tikka masala. Very very good! I let it sit out and rise most of the day and it tripled in size. Was able to get 7-8 naans. Next time I may add a bit more salt, but overall I was very pleased!
